The Castle of Otranto, a seminal work by Horace Walpole first published in 1764, is widely recognized as the inaugural gothic novel. This tale, set in a haunted castle, intricately weaves together themes of medievalism and terror, establishing a stylistic foundation that has influenced contemporary gothic literature, films, art, music, and the goth subculture. In its second edition, Walpole designated the novel as "A Gothic Story," cementing its significance in the genre's evolution.
