Candide

Candide is a pivotal Enlightenment novel that chronicles the journey of an optimistic youth who believes he lives in a paradise despite the harsh realities around him. Through this satirical narrative, Voltaire critiques the philosophy of optimism, particularly Leibniz’s idea that we inhabit "the best of all possible worlds," all while reflecting on the tumultuous events of the Lisbon earthquake and the Seven Years' War.
