In this ambitious semi-autobiographical novel, Gilbert Pinfold, a reclusive Catholic writer plagued by insomnia and a unique mix of sedatives, embarks on a sea voyage aboard the SS Caliban to Ceylon. As he struggles with his mental state, the sounds of wild jazz bands and barking dogs soon morph into disembodied voices discussing his life in alarming detail. This modern paranoid narrative immerses readers in Pinfold's descent into madness, blurring the lines between reality and the echoes of his troubled mind.
