In "Refractive Africa: Ballet of the Forgotten," finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and winner of the California Book Award in Poetry, Will Alexander presents three powerful long poems that explore themes of colonial history and artistic legacy. The opening piece honors Nigerian-Yoruban author Amos Tutuola, while the closing work pays tribute to Malagasy poet Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo. Through vivid imagery and a dynamic linguistic style, Alexander navigates the complex connections between culture, history, and the concept of a "charged aural colony," making this collection a profound meditation on diasporic experiences.
