River Spirit

In "River Spirit," when siblings Akuany and Bol are orphaned by a village raid in South Sudan, a young merchant named Yaseen takes them in, forging a complex bond that will last into adulthood. As a revolutionary leader known as the Mahdi rises, Sudan's fate hangs in the balance, forcing Yaseen, a Qur'an scholar, to confront his loyalties while Akuany navigates a tumultuous journey across the country. Through the interconnected narratives of seven individuals during the Mahdist War, Leila Aboulela explores themes of love, freedom, and the impact of imperialism, weaving a poignant tale of devotion amid chaos.
