When American twins Bud and Lindy move to England, they find themselves staying with their Aunt Edythe and Uncle Clifford while their grandmother is ill. Uncle Clifford, an author of children's books about the Turnipins—tiny, magical beings—leads the twins to discover a small door in the woods that reveals the Turnipins are real. When developers threaten the Turnipins' home, Bud and Lindy vow to help, but the magical Token they receive brings unexpected consequences.
