In August 1860, the Victorian Exploring Expedition, led by Robert O'Hara Burke and accompanied by surveyor William Wills and a team of 17 others, embarked on a bold mission to be the first Europeans to cross the Australian continent. Armed with 20 tons of equipment, they faced immediate challenges, including internal disputes, harsh weather conditions, and a struggle for supplies, often rejecting aid from Indigenous people. As the expedition progressed, Burke and his companions made a desperate attempt to reach the Gulf, ultimately resulting in a tragic loss of lives, with only John King surviving to recount the harrowing journey. The legacy of Burke and Wills endures as a testament to human endurance amidst adversity.
