Confederates in the Tropics

"Confederates in the Tropics" features Charles Swett's 1868 travelogue, providing a detailed, scholarly look at Belize and Honduras through the eyes of a former Confederate. The book examines the motivations of Confederate migrants fleeing defeat and Reconstruction, offering a comparative analysis of Southern expatriate communities in Latin America. Swett's diary, presented in an accessible format, reveals the hopes, challenges, and ultimately the fate of these early settlers, while also exploring broader themes of Southern identity and exile in the post-war era.
